Goalkeeper distribution has changed the first phase entirely

A generation ago a goalkeeper was picked on shot-stopping. The order of those requirements has changed at almost every level.
The first pass
Playing out from the back only functions if the keeper can break a first line of pressure reliably. Teams that press high now target the keeper specifically, because the reward for forcing an error there is enormous.
The most dangerous moment of a build-up is the pass that starts it.
The risk is real and visible, which is why the debate about whether it is worth it never quite settles.
